Best Tips for Utilizing Space in Your Apartment

Written by Posted On Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:49

Living in an apartment community comes with its perks. You don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn, someone else will be responsible for all of the repairs, and you probably have access to an impressive list of amenities, like a fitness center or swimming pool. However, it can also come with its challenges. Most notably, apartments tend to be tight on space. To help you make the most of your cozy quarters, following are a few tips for maximizing the space in your apartment.

Clear the Clutter

Before you can even start getting organized, you need to eliminate all of the clutter. Still holding on to all of those old t-shirts from college? Do you own about 20 different coffee mugs, yet you always use the same two? Are you one of those people who keeps every card from every occasion? As you begin the process of putting things away in your apartment, really evaluate what you need and use. The rest should either be trashed or donated.

Use Design Tricks to Your Advantage

While you cannot actually create more space in your apartment, there are certain design tricks you can implement to make the space appear larger than it actually is. Instead of going for dark colors on your walls, keep things light to make the space feel wider and more spacious. White, cream, and beige are the perfect paint colors to use in a small apartment. Once you have the walls painted an appropriate color, you can then use mirrors to also give the illusion of more space. Lastly, leave your windows uncovered or opt for sheer curtains. Using heavy draperies will only make your apartment feel smaller and more closed in.

Choose Furniture that Makes an Impact

One of the advantages of having a small apartment is that you don’t have to purchase a lot of furniture to fill the space. While you may want to keep some of the big things pretty neutral, like your couch and dining set, have fun with other details. Choose an interesting piece of art to make a statement in your living room, or get a throw with a bright pattern to add a pop of color to your bed.
